Queens Library Is for Everyone Campaign

Queens Library, N.Y.

2017

Innovation Synopsis

The "Queens Library is for Everyone Campaign" enlists every library in Queens to make clear that we are here for everyone no matter their background, circumstances or identity, and that we will provide customers with the programs, resources and services they need to pursue their dreams and improve their lives.

Challenge/Opportunity

At a time when many people in our diverse communities feel vulnerable or uncertain, when they’re wondering if this is still the place they’d pinned their hopes on, we must make absolutely clear that Queens Library is here for everyone, regardless of immigration status, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, disability status, political persuasion or age. Staff must match that message with a customer experience of welcoming, support and meaningful programming.

Key Elements of Innovation

Throughout the libraries, staff at all levels actively reach, welcome and serve the public. Visual materials (buttons, stickers, t-shirts, multilingual signage), a campaign website and a social media campaign increase awareness, provide information, and generate engagement. Signature initiatives include a 31-hour open house to provide programs and services at all hours and a $100,000 innovation fund of grants of up to $10,000 challenging libraries to develop and implement innovative initiatives in alignment with campaign goals.

Achieved Outcomes

The campaign is raising public awareness of our openness, inclusiveness and offerings, engaging all staff to reinforce a culture and practice of welcoming and support and expanding programs and services for vulnerable individuals and communities. With community partners, we’ve increased know your rights, citizenship and other public and staff workshops. Staff now regularly and creatively welcome the public within and beyond their libraries, visit homeless shelters, schools, businesses, bus stops and senior centers and attract new cardholders.
