LAUNCH

Dayton Metro Library, Ohio

Workforce and Economic Development | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

"LAUNCH" is an umbrella campaign to connect patrons to free job skills and resources. By providing a single destination (online and in-branch), "LAUNCH" provides the workforce development programs, tools and support to help patrons in every aspect of their career path, whether they’re starting out, starting over or improving skills.

Challenge/Opportunity

Libraries are being asked to do more and more for workforce development. In 2016, Dayton Metro Library evaluated its skills and resources to determine how we can best meet the community’s need. "LAUNCH" was created to expand the workforce programs, as requested by community partners, and to be a single destination for our many free resources that serve workforce needs. With "LAUNCH," job seekers of all ages have a starting point for workforce success.

Key Elements of Innovation

"LAUNCH" serve two purposes. It is an umbrella brand for the resources and tools DML offers. High-speed WiFi, laptop check-outs, fax/scan capabilities, career databases, computer classes and Lynda.com are all marketed under "LAUNCH" to demonstrate how DML is a valued resource for workforce development. "LAUNCH" is also the home to expanded job seeker programs that serve both white collar and blue collar workers with networking, resume review, interview prep and helpful classes.

Achieved Outcomes

Since positioning the library’s workforce resources and programs under "LAUNCH," the business services librarian has been able to develop many new, important partnerships with economic development leaders at the state, county and city level. Recognizing the resources of the library, partners are hosting their own events at our "LAUNCH" point and our business services librarian has started offering more off-site workshops introducing the "LAUNCH" program. DML is now a recognized community partner, addressing critical need.
