Innovation Synopsis

Los Angeles Public Library’s "LA Made" cultural program series aims to educate and inspire individuals in the areas of literature, arts and music, and other areas of knowledge with a humanities context. It focuses on the diverse cultural and artistic landscape of LA to promote civil discourse and social action.

Challenge/Opportunity

In support of lifelong learning and to provide arts- and humanities-based programming for adults throughout the year, "LA Made" strengthens the Los Angeles Public Library as a community destination for learning and civic engagement, stimulating personal and community growth. Programs engage adults across the lifespan and from culturally diverse backgrounds, leading to active dialogue and participation that will ultimately result in stronger communities, as well as increased library usage.


Key Elements of Innovation

"LA Made" shines a spotlight on the diverse pool of artistic and performance talent and knowledge that exists in Los Angeles, including art, theater, dance, music and literature. Examples include the Golden Bridge Choir, Lula Washington Dance Theater, RuPaul and Jonathan Gold. Providing excellent and innovative free programming at library locations across the system attracts new users, increases year-round library usage, encourages creativity and storytelling, stimulates the imagination and enhances social and community connectedness.


Achieved Outcomes

In just over a year, "LA Made" has engaged 5,806 Angelenos at 112 programs. Exit surveys have demonstrated the value that patrons place on the library offering programs that are free and accessible to everyone. With a vast range of offerings, the series successfully highlights the immense artistic and performance talent in Los Angeles. "LA Made" has measurably strengthened the library as a core community destination for cultural relevancy, knowledge acquisition and social awareness.
