Zine Fest

Sonoma County Library

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2023

Innovation Synopsis

Santa Rosa Zine Fest is a collaboration between Sonoma County Library and Santa Rosa Zine Collective. Zine Fest was weeklong celebration of zines, zine-making, and local talent, which centered BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and bilingual presenters and program content to reach the diverse communities of Sonoma County. Zine Fest 2022 featured virtual and in-person.

Challenge/Opportunity

Zine creators in our area are often part of marginalized communities -- BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ -- and while welcome in traditional "zine" events, don't always experience belonging. By centering outreach, support and participation from these communities, we sought to foster, encourage and empower creators.

Key Elements of Innovation

Outreach relied on reaching creators where they are, through social media, affinity groups, word of mouth and traditional media channels. Offering virtual events catered to those who have transportation or other issues, as well as honoring still-present public health concerns. While Zine Fest has a community of dedicated fans, to expand the reach of our 2022 event series, we also focused on promoting the event to Spanish-speakers, teens, and families.

Achieved Outcomes

The in-person event was held at a branch library that shares a parking lot with a shopping mall. Marketing attracted attendees, and the location also drew visitors from the mall. Over 150 people attended virtual events during the week, and 300 people attended in person, which drew all ages, including families, teens, adults, and seniors. Teens and parents of teens expressed gratitude after learning about zines as a new avenue for creativity. We saw a high level of community engagement on social media.
