Year-Round Library Nutrition Initiative

Palm Beach County Library System

Health & Wellness | 2026

Innovation Synopsis

The Palm Beach County Library System’s Library Nutrition Initiative addresses local food insecurity by providing children and families with free, barrier-free access to nutritious food throughout the year. Integrating Summer BreakSpot meals, school-year snacks, Weekend Meal Kits, and Mobile Pantries, the library leverages its trusted spaces and strong community partnerships to serve families with dignity, requiring no registration, library card, or proof of eligibility.

Challenge/Opportunity

Food insecurity affects children and families year-round, expanding significantly during after-school hours, weekends, summer vacations, and school breaks when school-provided meals are unavailable. Traditional food assistance programs often impose barriers like registration, income verification, or complex logistics, causing access challenges. The library system recognized the opportunity to utilize its trusted, highly visited branches as non-stigmatized access points that eliminate administrative barriers, meeting families where they already learn, play, and connect.

Key Elements of Innovation

The initiative creates a year-round nutrition support ecosystem by integrating Summer BreakSpot meals, school-year snacks, Weekend Meal Kits all 18 branches, and Mobile Pantries at two sites offering fresh produce, meats, and nutrition education. Serving all families with zero barriers, the program eliminates requirements for income verification, identification, or a library card. When facing 2025 regulatory shifts that reduced snack service hours, the library demonstrated adaptive implementation by engineering a new staggered schedule in 2026 that boosted snack distribution by nearly 55 percent while remaining compliant. By partnering with the School District of Palm Beach County, Palm Beach County Food Bank, and Feeding Dreams, the program expands using existing library spaces and community resources rather than new funding— redefining what a public library can be by turning local branches into all-in-one health and support centers.

Achieved Outcomes

The initiative demonstrates strong data-driven success and operational adaptability. In 2026, the library served 10,240 summer lunches and 8,256 summer snacks, representing a nearly 55 percent recovery in snack distribution over 2025 following schedule optimizations. The Weekend Meal Kit program expanded to 12 locations, distributing 13,709 kits in FY2025 and 7,004 kits during FY2026 Q1–Q2. Partnerships with the Palm Beach County Food Bank, Feeding Dreams, and the School District grew substantially, launching Mobile Pantries at the Lantana Road and Royal Palm Beach branches to distribute fresh produce, meat, and shelf-stable items alongside nutrition education. Feedback from staff and customers highlights that embedding dignity into food delivery within familiar, welcoming spaces allows children to stay engaged, nourished, and ready to learn.
