Write Michigan Short Story Contest

Kent District Library, Mich.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

As libraries evolve, we wanted to offer something that supported our state's writing talent, promoted writing as a craft and allowed participants to be part of a printed book. The anthology allows the library to be part of creating works and not just encouraging the consumption of it. We enjoy a close relationship with our local independent bookstore so we love to partner with them on programming, authors and services. Their Chapbook press prints our annual contest anthologies. And they have multiple locations around Michigan.

Key Elements of Innovation

Writers submit their stories to the contest. Each story is read by two volunteer reviewers. The semi finalists are then judged by a panel of Michigan writers and celebrity community members. They also get an opportunity at a public vote on our website - www.writemichigan.org. Winners get cash prizes (two prizes from the judges and one from the public vote) and finalists are included in a printed anthology. The award ceremony includes a keynote speaker, awards plus an author signing — the first for many of them!

Achieved Outcomes

In the four years we have held this contest, we have had 2,676 story submissions in three age categories, 495 volunteer reviewers (mostly librarians, booksellers and retired students), 33 judges and 63 stories published in our annual anthology. Last year, we had our first submissions from the Upper Peninsula. This program is a highlight for our library each year. At our awards ceremony each year, we talk to authors of all ages who are proud of their award and who thank us for offering the contest, as well as hear from parents who are encouraged to see their children's work recognized.
