Work Ready: Workforce & Career Development Program

LA County Library

Workforce and Economic Development | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

Work Ready helps customers build job skills or seek new career opportunities, while offering a device or internet connection to make it happen. Customers enroll in six-week sessions with weekly virtual events, can borrow a laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot kit for the entire session and receive supporting job search materials.

Challenge/Opportunity

COVID-19 had a devastating impact on LA County’s economy, causing a record 20% unemployment rate — the highest in the state. Many areas of LA County which are disproportionately and negatively impacted by the digital divide have also seen some of the most substantial job losses. Those without a device or reliable internet have limited access to the tools and resources necessary to find employment. The library sought to help those suffering both job losses and limited connectivity to reach their career goals.

Key Elements of Innovation

This holistic approach to professional development helps those who experience barriers to technology become competitive in the workforce. Staff evaluate data each session to make improvements with new and diverse workshop topics such as adapting military skillsets or featuring women entrepreneurs, and marketing campaigns that reach different communities and those with limited internet access. Work Ready leverages and strengthens partnerships with those such as the Department of Consumer & Business Affairs and U.S.VETS.

Achieved Outcomes

Since December 2020, Work Ready kits have had over 678 circulations and 8,087 people have attended a live workshop or viewed recorded content. Surveys show that participants feel the workshops are eye-opening and they appreciate the caliber of presenters, useful information and motivation. The volume of kits available ensures continuous connectivity, time to build a resume and apply to several jobs. One participant communicated to staff that it enabled them to secure job interviews, eventually leading to a job offer.
