WonderKnook PlaySpaces

Kent District Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2023

Innovation Synopsis

The early learning spaces are some of the most well-loved areas at KDL, but they were in dire need of an update. New trends in early childhood learning inspired a shift from traditional toy-based playrooms to dynamic learning spaces, intentionally designed to encourage open-ended, child-centered play. At KDL, they are now WonderKnook Playspaces.

Challenge/Opportunity

Not willing to compromise on safety or quality when it comes to the library’s littlest patrons and taxpayer monies, KDL had many safety and durability concerns and needed a vendor with experience designing libraries and young child spaces to address them. TMC Furniture accounted for all concerns by rounding furniture corners and placing cut outs on house-like structures to accommodate sprinkler systems, among other solutions. Additionally, all items were built to withstand heavy duty commercial use for long-term play.

Key Elements of Innovation

  • All 20 KDL branches received a new Wonderknook with a custom piece and loose parts play.
  • Each space highlights the rich and unique diversity of their specific community, whether by nodding to history, a local landmark or general community interest.
  • The library visit experience is now gamified, encouraging visits with an attractive illustrated map of all WonderKnook spaces and prize incentive (a custom coloring book with KDL-branded crayons) for families who visit five or more branches.

Achieved Outcomes

  • Spaces inspired by early childhood educational philosophies and informed by local experts and partners to promote positive formative experiences with the library.
  • Clear and concise Visual Purchasing Guide for manipulatives (disseminated internally) ensures consistency in quality.
  • Branches report increased visitor counts since installation for an average increase of 15% since November 2022.
