Innovation Synopsis
The Winter Literacy + Attendance Challenge is a free, citywide initiative, in partnership with the Cleveland Browns’ Stay in the Game! Attendance Network. The challenge is designed to help families and scholars of all ages remain engaged with reading and learning during the winter months.

Key Elements of Innovation
The challenge uses a game-style bingo format to invite scholars from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 to complete reading and literacy activities at their own pace. Each bingo card includes grade-appropriate reading goals and engaging activities designed to make reading fun and accessible. The partnership with the Cleveland Browns’ Stay in the Game! Attendance Network brings together two major Cleveland institutions around a shared commitment to literacy and attendance. By connecting reading, attendance and play, the challenge gives the library a new way to keep scholars engaged with learning during the winter months.
Achieved Outcomes
More than 8,200 scholars joined the Winter Literacy + Attendance Challenge this year, reading 2,365,428 minutes, with 1,663 completing the challenge. Participation, reading time and completion were tracked through Beanstack.
After her son won the challenge, a parent reached out directly to staff at her local West Park Campus to share what the program meant to her family: “Programs like this show how important libraries are in fostering a love of learning and building confidence.”
