Washington Wizards Winter Reading Challenge

Prince George's County Memorial Library System | DC Public Library | Alexandria Library (joint submission)

Education - Children & Adults | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

With the goal of increasing youth library engagement and promoting healthy living, PGCMLS, DC Public Library and Alexandria Library collaborated with the Washington Wizards basketball team to present the inaugural Wizards Winter Reading Challenge from January 1 through March 31, 2021. It was the first tri-state library challenge in the D.C. region.

Challenge/Opportunity

The COVID-19 related limitations across library services presented questions of how to keep kids (and adults) engaged. This, of course, included reading and checking out materials (curbside and online) but also promoting mental and physical wellness in a time of increased stress and inactivity. The Wizards were eager to partner with three local libraries to promote enjoyment of a variety of educational activities in which participants could earn points and prizes for reading and wellness milestones.

Key Elements of Innovation

The three library systems utilize the Beanstack logging platform. Activities were designed to ensure that customers in each county had the same experience. Participants earned points and prizes (provided by the Wizards) by logging physical fitness sessions, Wizards game ‘attendance’, time spent reading, borrowing materials and engaging with the library and Wizards on the websites and social media. Each system also provided book selections for the Wizards online Book-of-the-Month showcase that continues year-round.

Achieved Outcomes

The success of this collaboration in its first year has strengthened the relationship among the three library systems and the Wizards. The program will expand in 2022 with increased print, digital and social media promotion. Notably, branch staff will provide registration assistance and word-of-mouth advertising in the branch, which should increase participation and engagement significantly. We will continue to leverage these library/professional sports team partnerships to reach new audiences.
