Innovation Synopsis

Wichita Public Library locations turned meeting room spaces into quarantine and storage rooms, and public computing spaces to allow safe social distancing for customers. Since these spaces are occupied for other purposes, library staff created a succinct virtual programming operation to provide information and entertainment to the public.

Challenge/Opportunity

Many of the library’s public spaces can’t accommodate large gatherings of people while maintaining six feet social distancing. In order to provide quality programming that informs and entertains, WPL staff worked on a plan to move many in-person programs to a virtual format using Zoom. Although there are customers who won’t be able to access programs due to digital barriers at home, the library sees an opportunity to reach people who might otherwise not be able to make an in-person program.


Key Elements of Innovation

WPL staff created several components to make virtual programming possible, including a succinct run-of-show outline that includes:

  • A pre-program slide deck promoting current library services, upcoming programs and reading recommendations based on the program
  • An introduction with “housekeeping” items for participants
  • An email containing links to handouts, Zoom information, recommended reading lists and a link to a Project Outcome survey

Achieved Outcomes

The Zoom platform lets up to 295 people register for a program. Because of this feature, hundreds of people are registering for virtual programs. Staff is selecting certain programs to record, edit and post on the library’s Youtube account so more people can view programs at a more convenient time. Customers are grateful the library is providing this alternative programming avenue so they can still engage with the library while practicing public health and safety measures.
