Many families with young children aren't already library users, but are park users. Some caregivers, thinking of the libraries of the past, believe that their toddler won't be welcome in the library, and may not be aware that there are toddler-friendly programs, activities and books at the library. The Houston Public Library (HPL) librarian presenting the story time is a friendly face that invites families to visit the library, and shows how fun the library can be. Providing story time in a non-traditional setting, we are able widen our reach to non-library users and turn them into library lovers!

Toddler Tuesdays is a Discovery Green Park program. Houston Public Library (HPL) participates by providing children's librarians who read the featured book and sing songs with the toddlers and their caregivers. HPL is able to promote the library, sign-up families for library cards, and let the audience know about fun things that are happening at the library for toddlers (Summer Reading Program, story times at Neighborhood Libraries). Discovery Green improves the quality of their story time program by having a professional children's librarian read, sing and play with the kids in this mutually beneficial partnership.

Partnership with Discovery Green for this program helps the Houston Public Library reach audiences that weren't previous library users, and turn them into library users. Caregivers are made aware of what the library has to offer. Many families that attended Toddler Tuesday signed up for the Summer Reading Program for the first time this year, and 12 families signed up for library cards at a Toddler Tuesday program. A note left at the library: "Hey Sara, Sadie misses "Toddler Tuesday" so much! We came to join the Summer Reading Program & to say "Hello!" Take care, Andrea & Sadie A."
