The Library Lineup: Reading as Cultural Experience

Denver Public Library

Advocacy & Awareness | 2026

Innovation Synopsis

The Library Lineup is Denver Public Library’s new initiative for working-age adults, designed to reach people who have not traditionally engaged with DPL adult programming and reconnect them with reading for pleasure. DPL creates immersive, after-hours cultural experiences in museums, theaters, parks, historic buildings, and transit, where literature, music, performance, visual art, place, and conversation are woven together by design. By creating experiences worth leaving home for, The Lineup brings new adult audiences into community with one another, builds a citywide literary culture, and expands what people believe a public library can be.

Challenge/Opportunity

Much of Denver Public Library’s (DPL) branch programming happened during daytime hours, when many adults were at work. We were successfully serving children, families, caregivers, and older adults, but a large share of Denver’s working-age population was not engaging with library programs in a meaningful way. One patron captured the gap: “a lot of us work 9-5 so the clubs offered are not centered towards the working class.” The challenge was not simply to move programs later. We began with a simple test: does this pass the “leave your couch at the end of a workday” test? The answer had to be yes. We designed experiences compelling enough to get adults out into the city and into community: after-work hours, distinctive venues, strong atmosphere, artistic discovery, and social connection. The goal was to make the library part of adult cultural life and make reading for joy feel relevant again.

Key Elements of Innovation

Established as a DPL brand in 2026, The Library Lineup turns adult literary programming into a unified audience-development model and new arm of Denver’s literary culture. The arts are embedded in the design, not added to it: literature, music, visual art, performance, place, and conversation work together to create immersive reading experiences. The AfterWord program pairs a national author with a Colorado artist who creates new work in response; the two then interview each other onstage about craft and inspiration. Late Night Lit layers authors, live composition, visual art, performance, interviews, and a musical closing act. Silent Pages makes solitary reading communal through place, architecture, and live ambient music. One Book One Denver invites the city to interpret one book through multiple art forms. A distinct brand, newsletter, and social media build an audience around the work. Experience is the invitation; reading is the discovery.

Achieved Outcomes

In 2025, DPL established a new focus for adult literary programming, reaching 4,588 people across 21 programs in its first year. New formats were unified as The Library Lineup in 2026. Across participant surveys, 45% of respondents were new to DPL adult programming, while Silent Pages, Late Night Lit and Curiosity Collective routinely sell out or generate waitlists. In a 2026 survey of 423 attendees, 88% rated the experience 4 or 5 stars; among first-timers, only 15% came for the guest/talent, while 57% came for “something different to do,” showing the experience itself is audience-building. Customers describe the impact in human terms: one thanked DPL for creating space to feel “like I’m thriving and not just surviving the day-to-day”; another said shared, in-person experiences help people “feel part of something bigger. Something beautiful.” Another called a program “a bit life changing.” AfterWord author Melissa Broder wrote that the experience “gave the book another life.”
