Innovation Synopsis

The pandemic required a major communication pivot to help us build our capacity and connection. Daily Team Power Huddles ensured that all staff could stay connected and informed. Our organizational culture and capacity has improved so much so that we have committed to making Power Huddles a permanent mainstay of our communication strategy.

Challenge/Opportunity

Covid shifted us toward physical distancing and remote work environments causing our team to struggle to stay connected and informed. Intent on providing an open forum for discussion, BPL created daily Team Power Huddles for all staff. Managers created safe inclusive spaces for all levels/departments of the organization with the intentional design of (re)building workplace relationships. The transition to high frequency informal meetings has led us to a place of knowledge building and empowerment for all.

Key Elements of Innovation

We leverage online platforms to create hybrid and inclusive meetings for remote and in-branch staff to connect and share their knowledge and creativity. Teams provide key updates, training opportunities and a welcoming space for all staff to problem solve and refine service offerings together. As the pandemic required constant updates and procedural changes, Team Power Huddles quickly filled in any communication gaps and became a fun “gathering” to mitigate feelings of isolation.

Achieved Outcomes

Daily Power Huddles have improved engagement, connection and staff wellbeing. Staff look forward to meetings and feel more prepared for changing protocols and service developments. High-frequency meetings have proven more efficient than traditional monthly meetings and staggered training sessions that often create scheduling challenges and limit connection and learning. Power Huddles create a 360 feedback loop enabling managers to quickly identify issues systemwide and opportunities for improvement and innovation.
