How do we help students use the library? How do we make it easier for students to seek out homework support, check out books, attend programs and use library computers?

Partner with Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) and the Archdiocese of Louisville Schools to give each student (116,000) a library card. The school systems provide information databases and LFPL has the cards manufactured. Some private schools also participated last year.

• Add value by partnering with Transit Authority of River City (TARC), our local public bus system, and Kids Trax. The SPPC acts as student ID for a discount on TARC. Agencies which provide JCPS after-school programs use Kids Trax software to track participation via SPPC.
• Train staff at all library locations to ask for a child’s SPPC.
• Visit classes to train students on the library’s databases and resources.
• Send information home to parents explaining the many resources and services the library offers.
• Attend Literacy nights at schools to educate parents about their child’s card.
• Add yearly any new students to the system, including all incoming kindergarten students.

• Virtually every school age child in Metro Louisville has a library card.
• At end of first year, students were using their SPPCs to check out 1,000 items per day (2007).
• That number has nearly tripled with 2,855 circs per day (2010).
