STEAM Saturdays at the Library

West Kendall Regional Library (Miami-Dade Public Library System)

Education - Children & Adults | 2025

Innovation Synopsis

The West Kendall Regional Library features STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Architecture and Mathematics) programs twice a month on Saturdays to promote awareness and encourage participation in STEAM-related fields among underserved populations within our community. Working with a certified MDCPS teacher to present "Saturday STEAM Adventures!" and the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science to present "STEAM Saturdays with Frost Science," the West Kendall Regional Library offers educational programming with interactive methods of delivery that stimulates the minds of the children in our community who otherwise would not have exposure to science related topics.

Challenge/Opportunity

The West Kendall Regional Library serves the community located at the geographic western edge of Miami-Dade County. This area primarily comprises working class families, many of whom are first generation Americans. Library staff noted a high volume of patron feedback requesting STEAM programming during weekends. Children and tweens expressed interesting in exploring emerging technologies while parents sought weekend activities of educational value to engage their children while being enjoyable for the family. Parents noted that such activities were limited to establishments such as the Philip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and the Miami Children’s Museum, located far away on the other side of the county and requiring prohibitive monetary costs for working families. The library resolved to bring educational activities for children and tweens that had educational value in its promotion of STEAM that are free and open, closer to home.

Key Elements of Innovation

The library contacted the Frost Museum's outreach team and arranged for monthly interactive STEAM programs for children and tweens at the West Kendall Regional Library. These programs were scheduled for the third Saturday of every month. The library also coordinated with a tutor from the library's Homework Help and Tutoring program, a certified STEAM teacher from Miami-Dade County Public Schools, to conduct "Saturday STEAM Adventures," a program held on the first Saturday of the month. This ensured bi-monthly STEAM programs at the library for our patrons. Staff librarians took professional development training on STEAM education topics, sharpening their abilities to present STEAM programming and provide support via library services, allowing the library to expand promotion of STEAM to children whose interests are activated via programming.

Achieved Outcomes

The program was a well-received complement to our Saturday Homework Help and Tutoring program. Patrons expressed their satisfaction with the content and manner in which programming for STEAM Saturdays at the Library is presented as well as their appreciation of the library for offering the valuable services that are not offered anywhere else. West Kendall Regional piloted "STEAM Saturdays at the Library" to provide the working-class families we serve with access to quality STEAM weekend programming, introducing and promoting science and related fields to children who are interested, but otherwise would not have ready access or easy exposure. The high attendance numbers and positive feedback has inspired other branches to follow suit in presenting STEAM programming for their communities.
