Seventy-Fifth Birthday Appreciates Public Support

King County Library System, Wash.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

2017 marked King County Library System’s 75th Birthday. The promotions, activities and year-long festivities reminded taxpayers of their strong support of KCLS and all 49 libraries celebrated their diverse history. A partnership with HistoryLink.org offered a full compilation of KCLS library histories, and promotions heightened awareness of KCLS’ deep roots in King County.

Challenge/Opportunity

The 75th Birthday celebration reinforced and raised awareness of the impact that KCLS has had on communities past, present and future. It served to highlight the relevance of KCLS libraries through the decades and how taxpayer support made it all possible, even to this day. The celebration and history reminders reinforce that KCLS is an institution that manifests democratic values and maintains an indispensable connection to its patrons and communities.

Key Elements of Innovation

A partnership with HistoryLink.org made the extraordinary history of KCLS available to everyone; more than 50 essays/timelines were created. The year kicked off with a Display Contest at all libraries, a library card contest and a fun video with staff featuring staff kicked off the social and advertising campaign. Monthly eNewsletters, branded assets, local library events, radio podcasts with local historian, a proclamation by the Governor and ongoing PR kept the visibility high all year.

Achieved Outcomes

Outcomes achieved include: a cohesive, detailed compilation of KCLS history searchable by library name or at http://www.historylink.org/File/9826 (previously did not exist); the public has a deeper understanding of KCLS history, impact and foundational values and feels appreciation from KCLS for their support; a significant increase in social engagement; new partnerships (HistoryLink.org, KIRO radio and historian Feliks Banel); active participation by and with staff, key stakeholders and elected officials.
