Innovation Synopsis

Sensory Friendly Browsing Hours offer opportunities for children and teens with special needs to use the library in a safe and welcoming environment before the library opens. This series features everything available during regular hours as well as an opportunity to access the library’s resources in a quiet and sensory friendly environment.

Challenge/Opportunity

Traditional library settings can be stressful for children with sensory issues and for their caregivers as well. The buzz and excitement of a public place can be too overwhelming for people with special needs, especially those with autism spectrum disorders. The unpredictability of the children's behaviors can also prevent them from attending traditional storytime classes and activities. Sensory Friendly Browsing Hour is also a space for families and caregivers to network, share community resources and develop trust.


Key Elements of Innovation

Children and teens with special needs as well as their families are welcomed to the library by trained, friendly staff who assist them through navigating the library and its various services: using computers, locating library materials and promoting positive social interactions with their peers. Staff have at their disposal sensory specific toys to help encourage positive play/interaction and minimize stress and anxiety. This event and the trained staff encourage attendees become more comfortable using the library.


Achieved Outcomes

Palm Beach County Library System’s Special Needs Committee organized Sensory Friendly Browsing Hours to provide sensory-sensitive and differently-abled individuals with an opportunity to explore libraries in a less stimulating environment and to encourage inclusion during regular hours. To date, 42 individuals have participated and staff at multiple locations have begun organizing similar events. This is an initial step to address some of this population’s specific needs as they relate to library service.
