Innovation Synopsis
George Memorial Library’s Senior Prom Series was a multi-part series that first brought the community together to generously donate gently used formalwear and accessories. These items were then given a second life. Area teens were invited to a shopping experience where they tried on and selected their prom dresses in a fun and supportive environment. We then used the remaining formalwear donations to hold a second event at a local assisted senior living and memory care facility: a "Senior" Senior Prom, complete with formalwear, decor, hair and makeup, a DJ, and the crowning of a prom king and queen. At the end of this series, all remaining items were donated to a local nonprofit thrift store that provides jobs and resources to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Challenge/Opportunity
Challenges:
- financial barriers to formalwear and accessories for teens attending prom and other special events
- limited access to a variety of styles, sizes, and gender-neutral options
- stigma families face in being unable to afford these items
- limited social and celebratory opportunities for older adults in senior care facilities
- social isolation among senior care facility residents

Key Elements of Innovation

Partners: Community donors, Pegasus Landing of Long Meadow Assisted Senior Living and Memory Care, volunteers, and Fort Bend County Women’s Center
Goals: Reduce financial barriers, create inclusive celebrations, reach patrons outside the library, strengthen partnerships, responsibly reuse donations
Innovation: One donation drive created a low-cost chain of programs serving teens, older adults, and a nonprofit. It demonstrates how libraries can extend resources beyond a single program and reach people outside their walls. Plans for next year's event are underway following the same formula with expanded services for the teen shopping event portion and involving additional community partners.
Achieved Outcomes
500+ pieces of formalwear were donated, plus accessories and other clothing.
40 families attended, including some from out of town. Some teens chose two dresses: one for prom and one for school banquets. One attendee excitedly FaceTimed her mom. A Parks Youth Ranch emergency shelter teen selected items.
25 residents attended the senior living prom. They danced, laughed, and said they felt beautiful.
Expanded community involvement via donations and volunteer pool
Expanded current partnership with Long Meadow and introduced partnership with Fort Bend County Women’s Center
Remaining items went to Fort Bend Women’s Center to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Facebook feedback described everyone as “nice and helpful” and the dress selection as “beautiful.” An email from a parent said the event helped students “feel confident and celebrated.”
Success was measured through donations, attendance, volunteer involvement, community reach, and feedback.
