Challenge/Opportunity

The YMCA and the City of San Antonio came together to create the first San Antonio Public Library branch within a YMCA. Potranco Branch Library is made up of an exterior courtyard, an interactive maker space, a quiet study area, an expanded-hours self-service lobby and a children’s discovery area. The LibDispenser and Holds Locker are located in the shared lobby, making it easy to access and return library materials when the library is closed.

Key Elements of Innovation

Potranco Branch Library is home to San Antonio Public Library’s only LibDispenser and Holds Locker. This technology allows patrons to check out materials or pick up holds even when the library is not open. Due to the unique nature of the space, it is important that users of the facility have easy access to library resources and materials outside of library hours.

The San Antonio Public Library bases all service decisions on customer needs and preferences. The availability of the LibDispenser and Holds Locker give users of Potranco Branch Library more freedom to interact with the library when it is convenient for them. Since the opening of the Potranco Branch Library, the branch has received over 75,000 visits and circulated over 100,000 items. The LibBox has dispensed 351 items and the Holds Locker has held 170 items.
