(Re)Defining the Library

Baltimore County Public Library, Md.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

cross-functional team of staff from various BCPL positions, departments and branches was tasked with "(Re)defining the Library." The goal was to create an engaging and inspirational brand that empowers audiences, energizes stakeholders and supports the strategic plan while challenging the outdated perception of the library, to build community advocacy.

Challenge/Opportunity

Changing the perception that libraries are outdated resources, the new brand bridges the gap from traditional services to 21st century services. It challenges audiences to rethink the library and how our role in the community has changed. Today, we are a safe zone, civic center, office space, a think tank and a place with solutions. The brand inspires non-visitors to visit and encourages current customers to explore our vast resources which include more than books.

Key Elements of Innovation

In conjunction with an outside marketing firm, we held community and internal focus groups for feedback to develop core messages and values that were translated into a set of graphic standards for a consistent look, feel and tone in all of our messaging and communications to position the Library. The “B” in the logo reflects both the shape of an open book, laptop or window, establishing a visual connection between the library’s past and future.

Achieved Outcomes

This program has showcased the library as a vibrant and meaningful member of the community while providing 21st century services for learning, workforce development, arts/culture and inclusion. Our “Be All In” tagline is a promise that BCPL is “all in” and invites customers to explore, learn, create and connect. Or come to escape your everyday life in gracious spaces – and simply be. Attendance is trending upward since launch. Our video announcing brand on Facebook reached 50,000 views.
