Ralph McDaniels’ All Vinyl DJ Livestream

Queens Public Library, N.Y.

Health & Wellness | 2020

Innovation Synopsis

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Queens Public Library Hip Hop Coordinator Ralph McDaniels started an Instagram Live Chat on March 31 to broadcast a curated DJ set and an interview with local leaders and speakers. There have been over 45 90-minute programs to date. The programs are titled “Live Talk” and “The Quarantine Brunch.”

Challenge/Opportunity

This programming arose after the physical library branches were closed due to COVID-19. The library’s Instagram livestream creates an opportunity to provide innovative, entertaining and informative programming during a time of major shift and upheaval. Utilizing Instagram also removes outdated misconceptions about what is possible at a public library. We need programming that is socially distant, with the equipment already on hand, and that will provide information and current entertainment to our community.

Key Elements of Innovation

This program is innovative in several aspects. It uses social media to present a library program, it provides community connection in a time when the physical library is not open, it utilizes hip hop music under the Queens Public Library brand and it promotes other digital library programs using music as the draw. Streaming the program live is innovative and important, because the direct spontaneity of live programming signals to our community that the library is accessible and active during the pandemic.

Achieved Outcomes

McDaniels’ livestream strengthens our presence on Instagram and our interactions with younger patrons. The program increased our Instagram followers from 9,898 to 13,100. Although the stream was created to interact with local patrons through music, it now includes viewers from all over the world. For McDaniels, the most impactful program was after George FLoyd’s death. That program did not feature any music; instead McDaniels interacted with his viewers about community challenges and hope.
