Promoting Early Literacy Through Local Music

Edmonton Public Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2025

Innovation Synopsis

Music is a powerful tool for early literacy. Singing helps build vocabulary, enhance memory, strengthen social connections, and encourages early literacy development from birth. Sing it, Edmonton! Songs from the Neighbourhood is a children’s music compilation conceived of and produced by the Edmonton Public Library to promote early literacy as well as cultivate connections between the library, the community, and local musicians. Created in collaboration with local artists through a juried process, the album was professionally recorded in-house and features 25 established and aspiring songwriters, singers and musicians performing 20 original songs that reflect the local community. The free digital album can be streamed or downloaded on numerous platforms; its brightly illustrated lyric booklet appeals to both kids and parents and is distributed through Welcome Baby packages at public health centres.

Challenge/Opportunity

Since 2014, EPL has partnered with community health networks to put early literacy supports into the hands of families through its Welcome Baby program. Each tote bag includes a board book, literacy information, and—until recently—a music CD. EPL wanted to continue providing free, high-quality music to build children’s language and literacy skills and a love for story, but recognized many families no longer had CD players.
With more than 10,000 packages distributed each year, EPL sought to better meet families’ needs by shifting away from physical CDs to streaming access. To continue to promote music as an early literacy tool, the package now includes a QR code to streaming platforms and printed song lyrics styled as a picture book. This change also opened new partnerships with the local music community, who collaborated to create engaging content that connects families, the library, and local artists.

Key Elements of Innovation

EPL assumed the role of executive producer and collaborated with local musicians, and songwriters to produce a high-quality children’s album, an innovative approach that blended literacy and local arts. Songwriters and performers were mentored through every step of the production process by experienced musicians, a recording engineer, a music producer and library staff. This provided novices with a gentle initiation to the music industry and gave experienced artists the chance to grow their craft in a supportive environment. Created using the in-house recording studios and equipment in EPL’s Makerspace, this album highlights the creative potential of library resources. Presenting the song lyrics as an illustrated keepsake picture book further advances early literacy. This project positions the Library as a dynamic community space that fosters early literacy, supports local talent, and leverages technology to engage families in new and meaningful ways.

Achieved Outcomes

After welcoming submissions from both emerging and established artists, EPL collaborated with 25 musicians, songwriters, and performers to create Sing it, Edmonton! Songs from the Neighbourhood.
Within four months of release, the album received nearly 4,300 song streams on EPL’s website, prompting expansion to additional streaming platforms for greater accessibility. New partnerships with local artists and the music community strengthened EPL’s role as a creative hub. Reflecting on the experience, one artist shared, “[I’ve] been waiting to plunge [my]self into recording and performing music in an environment that supports and makes it possible … I was beyond elated that my song was chosen to be a part of history. Thank you to … everyone who thought of the children that will share in this joy forever”.
