Innovation Synopsis

"Passport to Learning Project" grants students and teachers at Lakewood Elementary School access and instruction on how to utilize Sunnyvale Public Library’s online resources. Directions on a passport-like booklet are provided for students to write their discoveries. Upon completion, students turn in their passport to earn a “Technology Skills” badge.

Challenge/Opportunity

Due to several factors, such as lack of transportation, fear of library fees and unawareness of library services, residents in North Sunnyvale underutilize the library. Thus, the "Passport to Learning Project" aims to increase awareness and access to the library’s online databases and educational resources while, at the same time, encouraging teachers to use these resources to enhance curriculum. There are no fines or fees associated with the Passport accounts, eliminating the fear of fees.


Key Elements of Innovation

The "Passport to Learning Project" connects library staff with students and community in North Sunnyvale by providing a library presence to increase awareness. Connection with teachers is also made by providing access to online resources with the intention to strengthen the district’s professional development curriculum on library resources. Finally, work collaboration between the Sunnyvale School District and the library has helped further deepen the partnership with respect to literacy, digital skills development and quality programming.


Achieved Outcomes

100 percent of students and teachers at Lakewood Elementary School participated in the project; providing students and educators to 1) access to, and use of, the Sunnyvale Public Library’s online resources and downloadable materials 2) awareness of both formal and informal learning resources and 3) resources to complement curriculum in classrooms. Sunnyvale Public Library hopes to expand the project to every school in the district over a two-year period with initial emphasis on Title I schools.
