San Antonio Public Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

In efforts to provide individuals with the opportunity to explore their gender expression in a safe environment and to build a network of support, San Antonio Public Library and the Pride Center San Antonio partnered together to provide two unique programs designed for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Challenge/Opportunity

Being in the LGBTQIA+ spectrum and navigating ones developing queer identity can be difficult and not everyone has a positive support system to lean on. Although society has grown to be more accepting, discrimination, harassment and rejection from family and friends are still constant challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ community. San Antonio Public Library and Pride Center of San Antonio aimed to provide an environment where everyone feels welcome, heard and respected.

Key Elements of Innovation

The new programs offered individuals the ability to feel comfortable in a judgement-free space where they could gain insight and ask questions. “Express Yourself Makeup Series” focused on exploring gender expression through the various uses of makeup. Makeup artists shared tips and techniques during a four-part online series. “The Tea Room” is an online resource where the public is encouraged to ask questions that are then answered by experienced members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Achieved Outcomes

Interest from the public and feedback from those who registered and participated in both programs was overwhelmingly positive. Staff facilitating the program received several emails after the “Express Yourself Makeup Series” voicing their appreciation and thankfulness for the opportunity. Several participants stated that having the San Antonio Public Library and Pride Center host these programs in a safe and welcoming space is inspiring and necessary.
