Opportunities for Local Heroes

Calgary Public Library, Alberta

Operations & Management | 2015

Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

We have recruited, trained and supported a large pool of highly skilled volunteers across many disciplines which helps the Library realize its vision and service goals, freeing employees to carry out activities for which they are uniquely qualified and suited. In a knowledge-based society, the consequences of low literacy or language skills can be devastating. Our volunteers help patrons of every age and ability with reading, writing, numeracy, technology, language and job search skills. The ability to find no-cost assistance at a key point in a person’s life can make a huge difference and the impact can be truly profound. For example, in Career Coaching program where highly skilled volunteers with a background in Human Resources provide one-on-one coaching to help patrons find employment.

Key Elements of Innovation

Volunteers support 26 unique volunteer-based library programs. Among many innovative programs, here are two examples.

  • Story Pals: In partnership with PALS, a child practices reading in a safe environment with a 4 legged volunteer. http://www.palspets.com/programs-and-facilities.html
  • Canadian Oil Sands Math Minds: With the use of JUMP math, volunteers use proven methods to engage students in learning mathematics and reduce math anxiety to encourage all students to reach their full potential.

Calgary Public Library has a very highly developed and diverse library volunteer program and serves as a center of excellence. Visit our website at: www.calgarylibrary.ca/volunteers to see more detail.

Achieved Outcomes

In 2014, 2300 volunteers gave over 50,000 hours of service across 18 community libraries, an increase of 32% since 2009. This corresponds to 27.7 Full-Time-Equivalent positions with an estimated value of over $1, 000,000. They directly helped over 11, 000 library patrons achieve their personal goals and, indirectly, many more! 48% are youth volunteers who gain experience, mentorship and leadership skills. They are given an opportunity to develop a spirit of volunteerism and an understanding of the value it brings to the community. Newcomers can learn and also give back! Newcomers are learners in our ESL Conversation Clubs and, at the same time, offer their skills as volunteers in other programs such as our Spanish Conversation Club.
