Prince George's County Memorial Library System

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

PGCMLS has been working to bridge the digital divide for years by offering public computer assess to customers and residents of Prince George’s County. While public computers are helpful to a many, Wi-Fi technology access was expanded with Chromebooks with built-in internet, hotspots and drive-up Wi-Fi to help 116,000+ residents get online.

Challenge/Opportunity

During the pandemic, PGCMLS recognized the impact of the digital divide on our customers and community; 116,000+ residents lack home broadband. The lack of devices and stable internet access proved to be a challenge for students and adults. As a public library focused on closing the digital divide gap, we are well suited to help our customers and focus on areas in the community where there is the greatest need. PGCMLS identified opportunities to combine local, CARES Act and private funds to rapidly grow internet access.

Key Elements of Innovation

PGCMLS launched a pilot program called Online 2 Go. Customers can borrow Chromebooks with built-in internet, integrated web filtering capabilities and digital literacy training resources. These LTE-enabled Chromebooks in branded bags are unique and cutting-edge by providing all that is needed inside the device. Web filtering ensures the devices are safe for use by adults and students. Up to 5,700 households can borrow Chromebooks per year to borrow portable computers for work, education and entertainment.

Achieved Outcomes

PGCMLS purchased 830 Kajeet LTE Chromebooks. The Chromebooks offer internet access through the built-in LTE wireless connection to the Verizon wireless network, requiring no customer data usage or internet billing. For county residents without access to a device or internet at home, the LTE-embedded devices are ideal and meet our goal of providing devices and broadband access to customers in their homes. PGCMLS staff provide bilingual English/Spanish technical support and training videos.
