MPL Trail Project

Markham Public Library

Health & Wellness | 2023

Innovation Synopsis

This project focused on social cohesion, mental health and pandemic recovery by encouraging community members to connect with the natural environment and cultural history of Markham, while promoting digital literacy, inclusion and economic recovery along our Main Streets.

Challenge/Opportunity

There was a need to rebuild library membership, support the mental health of the community and create opportunities for community members to connect safely post-pandemic. MPL has two main streets with local business and are connected to extensive trails as part of the Rouge Valley system. MPL sought to support social and economic recovery while promoting the mental health benefits of connecting with nature.

Key Elements of Innovation

This program was developed by a cross functional group of staff, taking a community-led approach to service planning. The project featured an app designed by local student developers to digitally animate the trails with local and natural history, as well as "storywalk" content from diverse local creators to share their unique perspectives on the natural environment. Additionally, to reduce barriers to participation in outdoor recreation, MPL created the Trailhead lending collection of items for use on the trails.
