MPL Pride Festival and Rainbow Family Story Time

Memphis Public Libraries

Democracy | 2023

Innovation Synopsis

Libraries are the great equalizer in society, and MPL is committed to creating safe and welcoming spaces for our community’s most vulnerable citizens. MPL Pride Kick-Off and Rainbow Family Storytime (RFST) were launched in 2019 to ensure that library offerings are reflective of diverse composition of the City of Memphis.

Challenge/Opportunity

Tennessee recently became the first state to restrict public drag performances, and the bill further bans gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. This political climate has been building for years, and MPL is committed to creating safe and welcoming spaces for all, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. This growing need for LGBTQ+ inclusive programs inspired our staff to create two innovative programs that were launched together in 2019: Pride Kick-Off and RFST.

Key Elements of Innovation

The heart of these programs is inclusion: The Library is not a political battleground, it is a safe space. These offerings reach a population who has been historically excluded from public services. Equity is the cornerstone of democracy, and MPL is a community leader in these efforts. Storytimes are among the most popular programs, and we want all families to see themselves represented. Pride Kickoff showcases the Library as a place for everyone and connecting attendees with other inclusive partner organizations.

Achieved Outcomes

Our staff has uses Pride and RFST to engage the LGBTQ+ community, provide needed resources to attendees, to reinforce the Library as a safe and welcoming place for all, and to foster mutual understanding and kindness in our community. We have partnered with OUTMemphis each year and have served more than 1,000 residents over the past four years.
