More Than a Month (Programming Initiative)

Oak Park Public Library, Ill.

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2017

Innovation Synopsis

Taking Black History Month beyond February, "More Than A Month" creates space for social justice, dialogue, learning and more. A team of librarians and paraprofessionals work together to create this year-long initiative exploring the African diaspora through programs, materials, events and conferences for the community.

Challenge/Opportunity

"More Than A Month" takes the opportunity to enrich understanding of a complex, historical legacy and to widen knowledge about the scope of black history. It uses a long term calendar to spark dialogue and education around complex minority issues. "More Than A Month" engages the community in an inclusive environment; producing events such as the celebration of Juneneeth, partnering with National Alliance on Mental Illness and creating a day long annual Social Justice Conference.

Key Elements of Innovation

A key element of this year’s "More Than a Month" initiative was the Social Justice Conference held this spring. Local keynote speakers, workshops for participants and a dedication to developing effective strategies and vocabulary to find solutions were major elements of this conference. It is also being built upon and expanded to a Youth Conference this fall, offering an even more inclusive opportunity for the community to engage on complex issues.

Achieved Outcomes

"More Than A Month" is continuing to grow, but already it has created a voice; a space for dialogue where significant topics to minority communities are celebrated and heard. "More Than A Month" strives to enrich understanding and widen knowledge, giving voice to a community that can often go unheard. It impacts a community through active engagement, humanizing the community experience.
