Monthly Snapshot

Lexington Public Library, Ky.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2016

Innovation Synopsis

The revitalized Library Highlights took an outdated, internal-only document and converted it to an engaging newsletter shared with staff, Library stakeholders, and the larger Lexington community. The new Monthly Snapshot embraces a system-wide view of Library programs and services and includes statistics and anecdotes to tell the Library’s story.

Challenge/Opportunity

For more than a decade, Library staff members submitted monthly highlights to the administrative team, to be shared with the Library Board of Trustees. The highlights varied in content, and there was no consistency in length or style. There was also inconsistency on whether or not photos accompanied the text. Furthermore, the highlights focused exclusively on public services, and did not include large system activities, support services accomplishments, or metrics. The document had lost its meaning. The Library was looking for new and better ways to share successes with the wider community.

Key Elements of Innovation

Monthly highlights and photos are submitted to the Adult Programming Committee chair and Administrative Support Coordinator. These highlights are edited for content and consistency, then organized into categories that correspond with the Library’s mission: to connect people, inspire ideas, and transform lives. Additionally, metrics are analyzed for inclusion and a monthly “top 10” highlights behind-the-scenes information to be shared. The Graphics Coordinator developed an active and engaging layout for the Monthly Snapshot and lays out the newsletter. The newsletter is shared with all Library staff, Boards, and is published on the Library’s website.

Achieved Outcomes

After nearly a year of the Monthly Snapshot, the Library has found a meaningful way to tell its story and share the intangible value of its services. By formatting the piece under the library’s mission statements, programs are brought into focus and are in direct support of the Library’s overall goals. We expect that as program information continues to be disseminated throughout all departments and locations, it will lead to fresh ideas and better communication among peers.
