Make It: Analog Makerspace for a DIY Generation

Lexington Public Library, Ky.

2016

Innovation Synopsis

The Makerspace at the new Eastside Branch of the Lexington Public Library is a workshop with basic tools and craft supplies where customers become makers. Customers can reserve the space for personal projects or participate in library programs geared towards learning through hands-on experiences.

Challenge/Opportunity

The need for accessible and free learning and meeting spaces continues to grow in Lexington, Kentucky. Over the past few years, the maker movement has increased in popularity throughout the country. People have the desire to create and learn how to make things for themselves. The Eastside Branch Makerspace provides customers with the opportunity to experiment with different materials and tools in a safe space created for artists, crafters, and new makers.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Eastside Branch Makerspace is where the library collection comes alive. Since opening the Makerspace, we have worked with various crafters and artists in the community to help determine what materials and equipment are needed. We provide basic tools, craft supplies, a concrete floor, numerous power outlets, tables, chairs, and a sink. Since March 2016, the Makerspace has opened up new opportunities for partnerships with the community. It is a place where artists and crafters can work together and share what they learn with others, and where new crafters can experiment with equipment and materials without expense.

Achieved Outcomes

It is our hope that the analog Makerspace will become Lexington’s go-to workshop for local artists and crafters in the community. We hope to partner with community makers and offer library programming that engages hands-on learning while incorporating STEAM activities for all ages. We would also like to focus on multi-generational programs that allow the young and old to teach each other different skills. We want this space to be unintimidating and open to all who wish to learn a new skill, create art, or make something for themselves.
