Library and Public School Partnership

Chattanooga Public Library, Tenn.

Education - Children & Adults | 2015

Innovation Synopsis

Chattanooga Public Library offers foundational youth programming that aligns with national standards and best practices including Every Child Ready to Read, STEAM and/or Common Core. In committing to this, the library expands informal learning by taking the best from formal learning strategies.

Challenge/Opportunity

The challenge is in making sure the library remains an informal learning setting while aligning with formal learning standards. The innovation happens when the two meet in harmony where youth are learning while having fun. By aligning both regularly-scheduled and walk-up (creation station) program planning around national standards, the library offers school aged children a fun place to come for supplemental learning and ages 0-6 a place to learn pre-literacy skills and best practices.

Key Elements of Innovation

Library youth services staff became knowledgeable about formal learning standards. The innovation led to acceptance of library staff of directed and focused programming. The Library was able to learn how to effectively measure programming use with outcomes and develop continual programming without having to increase staff size.

Achieved Outcomes

A foundational programming toolbox of all programs, including program measurements and outcomes, was offered at every library location. All programs offered within the library system meet at least three national standards/best practices. The library is a continual setting for informal learning for youth of all ages.
