Inclusion Work Groups and IDEA Champions

Toledo Lucas County Public Library

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

TLCPL Inclusion Work Groups ensure diverse and equitable year-round blogs, InstaRecs and programs extend beyond heritage month celebrations. They work independently and collaboratively to ensure intersectional representation. IDEA Champions admins work with these groups to create standardized EDI policies, practices and guidelines.

Challenge/Opportunity

TLCPL’s four existing work groups: Black History, Latino Cultural Committee, Welcome TLC and Women's History felt that their offerings were limited to designated heritage months which undermined the cultural value and opportunity to celebrate diversity year round. This was further supported through a perceived lack of diverse representation on our website, social media, book displays and blog submissions. All the groups felt their work was not being championed due to a lack of administrative support and advocacy.

Key Elements of Innovation

As IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) Champions, the EDI director, public services manager and adult and youth services coordinators advocate for inclusive and impactful year-round content and programming. Together, Inclusion Work Groups and IDEA Champions amplify diverse voices and experiences. As designated admin liaison, the EDI director expanded these groups to include Black History, Latino Cultural Committee, Welcome TLC, Women's History, AAPI Heritage, Ability Awareness and LBGTQIA+ PRIDE.
