Healthy, Wealthy and Wise-Employee Wellness

Pioneer Library System, Okla.

Health & Wellness | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

Pioneer Library System’s internal wellness initiatives empower staff to improve their physical, mental and fiscal health beyond traditional methods. We believe that when employees feel good at work, they “do good” at work. This is demonstrated through the creation of adaptable policies and innovative programs.

Challenge/Opportunity

PLS recognizes that staff are people, too! Our holistic wellness programs are designed to excite and engage staff, while overcoming barriers that many face in becoming well in mind, body and wallet. All programs are built into the workday, opt-in rather than mandatory and customized for each library’s unique space. Many approaches originate from a “trickle-up” approach, reflecting PLS’ inclusive method of workplace wellness.

Key Elements of Innovation

A committee of frontline staff from all levels across PLS play a key role in constructing and implementing wellness initiatives, increasing buy-in. Financial, mental and physical health is considered when creating system-wide policies, such as offering wellness, bereavement and personal time to staff and providing free, anonymous visits to mental health professionals. Wellness programs are included in staff meetings, including sessions on estate planning, suicide prevention, tai chi and a six-week “Fiscally Fit Boot Camp.”

Achieved Outcomes

PLS has achieved statewide recognition for wellness initiatives. In 2017, Oklahoma recognized PLS as a Certified Healthy Business and Breastfeeding Friendly Worksite. The implementation of new disaster preparedness strategies and improved emergency communication has led to lower mental stress during tornado season. Multiple employees use the employee assistance program each year to receive free counseling, and participants in employee financial programs report that they “feel empowered to take control of finances and make smart decisions.”
