Healthy Farmer’s Markets

Anythink Libraries

Health & Wellness | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

By partnering with local government agencies, farms and nonprofits, Anythink’s annual Healthy Farmer’s Markets reached community members in need throughout the pandemic. By providing fresh produce at reduced or no cost, the library helped to increase food accessibility during a critical time.

Challenge/Opportunity

For those facing food insecurity, the 2020 COVID-19 crisis presented new challenges. School closures, grocery store shortages and lost wages all placed strains on households struggling with food accessibility. The Healthy Farmer’s Markets provided nutritious produce while also promoting an environment of health. Attendees could learn about nutrition through demonstrations, obtain health screenings and discover health resources. Importantly, food assistance services like SNAP and WIC were accepted.

Key Elements of Innovation

Originally launched in 2017, the Healthy Farmer’s Markets are a partnership between Anythink and local agencies designed to increase access to fresh food. In 2020, the operating team worked to secure additional COVID-19 relief funds and grants to better meet the critical needs of the moment. With a focus on aging adults and underserved communities, Anythink hosted markets weekly at two Anythink locations. Qualifying attendees received vouchers for free produce.

Achieved Outcomes

During the 2020 market season, the Healthy Farmer’s Markets had 3,426 visitors. More than $55,477 in fresh produce was provided via vouchers at no cost to aging adults, as well as WIC and SNAP recipients. Attendees expressed how critical these markets were in meeting their weekly food and nutrition needs — even one weekly $25 voucher allowed for increased access to fruits in vegetables in households.
