Harry Bennett Local Author Series

Ferguson Library

Equity and Inclusion | 2025

Innovation Synopsis

Authors working independently or with small publishers face significant challenges in marketing and distributing their work compared to big-name authors who may benefit from their publishers’ resources. While the Ferguson Library does invite award-winning authors with name recognition, we wanted to explore another way to showcase talented authors who live in our community and who may face challenges reaching an audience. The Harry Bennett Branch Local Author Series (LAS) seeks to fill this gap by providing a platform for Stamford-area writers to connect with readers, share their stories, and build a network within their community. We look for both fiction and non-fiction authors speaking on a wide range of issues and experiences. This continues to be a popular program for those who want to explore new titles outside the traditional publishing space and connect with new people.

Challenge/Opportunity

This program is designed to connect and strengthen the Stamford community. This is an integral part of the strategic framework of the Ferguson Library. This program is designed to bring the community together and form new intentional partnerships for people to engage with each other in their community. The limited visibility and marketing opportunities for local authors can create a gap between creators and readers. Reaching a community is particularly challenging for debut authors as they promote their work. According to an article from the Urban Library Journal, marginalized writers, particularly authors of color, are systemically excluded by libraries and publishers. These authors rely on alternative networks to be heard and build community support. The Harry Bennett Local Author Series (LAS) provides a platform for authors from all backgrounds to share their work outside traditional channels.

Key Elements of Innovation

The LAS is a forward-thinking initiative that reimagines traditional author talks as collaborative, community-driven experiences. This program distinguishes itself through its personalized approach, offering a platform for writers and readers to share their stories in meaningful ways.

Structure

  • The LAS accepts and reviews book talk requests throughout the year.
  • The LAS focuses on local or underrepresented authors whose work fosters community connection and dialogue.
  • The author and the librarian ensure the content resonates with the audience.

Implementation

  • Authors work with librarians to create a tailored event based on need.
  • This program fosters meaningful dialogue around complex topics in a supportive space.
  • This program is the first of its kind for the library and continues to evolve over time.
  • This program elevates underrepresented perspectives to inspire and connect with one another.

Achieved Outcomes

Our LAS has become a dynamic platform for community engagement, attracting the attention and collaboration of several organizations. The Stamford Rotary Club has leveraged the series to recruit speakers for their own programming, recognizing the quality and relevance of the events. Our partnership with Stamford Pride for author Nikkya Hargrove enhanced our marketing efforts to successfully reach a diverse audience. The series has consistently received positive feedback from both attendees and presenters. The program's impact is measured by attendance. We have hosted:

- 32 local author events

- 637 attendees

- Averaging 20 attendees per session

This is a strong indicator of local interest and sustained community engagement.
