Innovation Synopsis
Fort Worth Public Library (FWPL) launched a staff-led Workgroup Initiative to address system-wide challenges through collaboration and innovation. Eight cross-functional groups focused on accessibility, onboarding, training, safety, communication, and digital tools. Their work produced tangible deliverables, including AAC boards in all branches, updated safety procedures, an internal communications framework, a resource-rich Empower Hour program, and integration of training into the City’s LMS. These efforts improved services, built capacity, and strengthened organizational culture.
Challenge/Opportunity
The initiative addressed:
- Inconsistent staff communication and training tools
- Gaps in accessibility and inclusion
- Fragmented onboarding processes
- Outdated safety and emergency protocols
- Lack of standardized policies and procedures
- Underutilized digital platforms (SharePoint, LMS)

Achieved Outcomes
AAC devices launched in all branches.
Over 150 staff surveyed for Empower Hour; monthly e-blasts and 500+ resource tracker created.
Newsletter framework and recommendations produced.
All in-person training loaded into LMS; SOPs and job aids drafted.
Onboarding tools piloted and integrated with LMS.
AED rollout coordinated with Fire Dept.; emergency planning underway.
SharePoint survey conducted; SOPs and guidelines in progress.
Circulation cash-handling SOPs updated; 53 SOPs advanced.
Feedback highlights stronger staff ownership, clearer workflows, and stronger partnerships.
