From Questions to Careers: Direct Employer Access
Palm Beach County Library System
Innovation Synopsis
The Palm Beach County Library System partnered with Palm Beach County Recruitment & Selection to transform standard jobseeker support into an innovative co-presented workforce model. By combining digital library career tools with direct expertise from County hiring authorities, the program provides hands-on resume guidance, pop-up career fairs, and "PBC Meet & Greet" events inside local libraries. This initiative removes barriers to public employment by meeting residents directly where they are.
Challenge/Opportunity
Jobseekers often face significant navigational barriers when attempting to understand and complete complex government job application processes, particularly when they lack direct access to hiring authorities. Previously, public library workforce resources and County HR expertise operated in isolated silos, limiting the potential for comprehensive jobseeker support. Traditional job fairs can also prove intimidating or inaccessible, leaving local residents without low-barrier pathways to public sector employment. Furthermore, area teens lacked hands-on guidance for professional resume development, foundational career exploration, and entry-level public sector positions.
Key Elements of Innovation
This initiative elevated library resources and county hiring services through an innovative co-presenter model. A Business Librarian demonstrated digital platforms—including Peterson's Career Prep, Brainfuse JobNow, and Udemy—while Palm Beach County’s Director of Recruitment & Selection provided guidance on navigating the County application process. The partnership introduced mobile lobby pop-up fairs that brought career information across 35+ County departments directly into high-traffic library spaces. This concept quickly expanded into structured "PBC Meet & Greet" events, connecting patrons with diverse department representatives in local branches. Through active collaboration between the Library System, County HR, and Teen Services, the initiative offered tailored resume instruction and volunteer credit for youth. By moving away from passive resource referrals toward direct, co-delivered employer access, this model set a new standard for public sector workforce integration.
Achieved Outcomes
The partnership has delivered 15 co-hosted resume workshops across nine library locations, directly equipping more than 71 adults and teens with essential career tools. Initial lobby pop-up fairs at the Main Library and Canyon Branch successfully engaged over 60 patrons with career opportunities spanning more than 35 County departments. Beyond branch walls, joint team outreach at six community career fairs extended these vital workforce resources to over 850 jobseekers across Palm Beach County. The initiative established sustainable cross-departmental networks linking Library Business Services, County HR, and Youth Services. Patrons and staff have responded enthusiastically, praising the convenience of direct employer access and prompting requests for ongoing pop-up events.
