Forward Thinking Speaker Series

Edmonton Public Library, Alberta

Education - Children & Adults | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

The Forward Thinking Speaker Series is an innovative approach to adult learning that invites thought leaders from various industries to share their ideas with the community. Edmonton Public Library has been successful at attracting top talent from across North America and this series has become the most highly attended program at EPL.

Challenge/Opportunity

Finding engaging and meaningful learning opportunities for adults can be challenging. At the same time, there are limited opportunities for adults to engage with thought-provoking ideas on a variety of timely topics. By tapping into what libraries do best – share diverse view points and encourage civil discourse, this series has established itself as a cornerstone of free-thinking and one of the most anticipated events in our city with attendance increases and consistently sold-out events.

Key Elements of Innovation

EPL has not avoided controversial thought leaders, and in doing so has solidified our stance as champions of free thinking. We’ve hosted speakers on a wide variety of topics ranging from intellectual freedom, xenophobia, women in politics to LGBTQ rights. In providing a wide array of speaking topics, we attract new audiences and provide compelling content for season pass holders who attend every event.

Achieved Outcomes

The Forward Thinking Speaker Series is the most well attended program for adults at EPL. In 2017, over 3,500 library cardholders attended six events and nearly $90,000 was raised in tickets sales and an additional $55,000 in sponsorships. Best of all this program attracts new customers that have not previously attended EPL programing. On average 33 percent of attendees are first time program attendees. The series experienced a 36 percent attendance increase in 2017.
