Expanded Exterior Wi-Fi

Vaughan Public Libraries

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

Free Wi-Fi accessibility has been extended from within bricks to the exterior parking lots of the three resource libraries in Vaughan. All citizens, library members or not, are now able to enjoy free Wi-Fi 24/7 on library grounds.

Challenge/Opportunity

Library members usually enjoy free Wi-Fi in all library branches. With the COVID-19 closure and many people relying heavily on Wi-Fi connection for working and learning remotely, VPL installed Wi-Fi extensions beyond the bricks of the resource libraries so that residents can access internet through the Wi-Fi in the parking lot of the resource libraries 24/7.

Key Elements of Innovation

During the COVID-19 closure, many residents did not have access to free broadband Wi-Fi to continue with their learning or work activities. It is important for the library to provide digital equity to the community during the pandemic. Free Wi-Fi service is available on the library property beyond regular service hours.

Achieved Outcomes

Since the availability of exterior Wi-Fi until the end of September 2021, there were 81,485 uses. This represents 68.36% of the total Wi-Fi usage (119,196 with both interior and exterior usage) of the same period.
