Innovation Synopsis

As Wichita Public Library continues its path towards a diverse, equitable and inclusive system, it’s important to remind residents the library is for everyone. A campaign focus of “The Library is for Everyone” circulates a message of inclusivity and community.

Challenge/Opportunity

After a successful elimination of overdue fines, staff wanted to communicate to residents that with this barrier removal, the library is a place for everyone, regardless of social status. This gave marketing an opportunity to create a cohesive campaign that not only shows the different customers served but also the growing variety of services offered.


Key Elements of Innovation

The Library strategized media buys to include print ads in newspapers for Black and Hispanic residents, digital ads on Google and YouTube, and a monthly article for a local mom's blog that highlights programs and services for children and teens. The simple ads show a person doing an activity with the phrase "The Library is for..." as the slogan. A simple URL directs people to the Library's website.


Achieved Outcomes

The campaign helps create new partnerships and establishes new promotional methods to engage customers and nonusers and welcomes both demographics to the library, and for those without a library card, encourages registration to unlock the Library's full potential. Ultimately, this campaign raises general awareness about the Library and highlights the changing work of public libraries and how the library serves as an essential community space for residents to learn and be entertained.
