Innovation Synopsis

The pursuit of racial justice is a community concern. As a Baltimore community partner, we engaged with intent in anti-racism learning and actions for our employees and communities of all races. EPFL curated resources from anti-racism research and scholarship and provided activities for children, teens, adults, employees and community customers.

Challenge/Opportunity

Baltimore is witness to significantly marginalized communities deeply segregated by a host of socio-economic factors with race as the leading indicator of access, opportunity and success. We ensure that all communities — across age-groups and races — and especially those confronting the greatest barriers, are provided a collection, services, programs and outreach that recognize, address and help to better navigate the impact of racial tensions within and beyond Baltimore communities, past and present.


Key Elements of Innovation

Three anti-racism committees:

  • Children — Spanish/English culturally affirming storytelling and activities themed to create a community, neighborhood and world kids want to see, realizing it can begin with them.
  • Teen — Video and writing prompts specific to John Lewis’ final letter to the youth, “Make Good Trouble,” engaging teens into racial and social justice action and how they see our nation moving forward.
  • Adult — Learning and action that challenge institutional and systemic racism, and that supports white anti-racist learning and allyship.

Achieved Outcomes

Partnerships with a museum of African-American History & Culture and a nonprofit organization, dedicated to anti-racist teaching and moving White people to act as part of a multi-racial majority for racial and social justice, were created and will be leveraged for sustained anti-racism work in the future. Reading groups and activities are currently ongoing and success metrics will consist of participation rates, counts of submissions, participant surveys and staff and partner surveys.
