Innovation Synopsis

Challenge/Opportunity

Learning new technology can be difficult regardless of age, but those introduced to technology later in life face special challenges. Relatives can be helpful but are not always available or patient. Adult education classes cost money, require extensive time, and may not end up answering relevant questions. Seniors also face the assumption that older people know less about technology, amplifying any intimidation that the latest technology may bring. Cyber Seniors’ casual learning environment empowers seniors to learn new skills and share their knowledge in a way relevant to the lives of their peers.

Key Elements of Innovation

Cyber Seniors’ weekly meetups are the only community-based, informal technology learning opportunity for seniors in Omaha. Our club gives seniors an inclusive space to ask questions without anxiety. Do Space provides a welcoming atmosphere for our senior volunteers to share their knowledge while assisting their peers. Our open format allows members to come for as long as they need, whether that is fifteen minutes or all three hours. They ask volunteers questions, gain new skills, and use their own knowledge to teach others. The comfortable, non-judgmental atmosphere lowers the barriers they face.

Achieved Outcomes

Since Do Space’s opening in November 2015, 18 volunteers have assisted over 900 people through our Cyber Seniors club. In 2016, our weekly meetups average over 30 attendees. Our attendees come from all backgrounds. Some have never used a computer. Others had advanced questions about Excel. Whether allowing members to better communicate with their family or improve their ability to apply for new jobs, volunteers tackled these questions and empowered attendees to teach others. From regulars to one-time visitors, Cyber Seniors allows Omaha seniors to learn about technology in a welcoming, low pressure environment.
