Concerts for the Community

Kent District Library

Advocacy & Awareness | 2023

Innovation Synopsis

Concerts for the Community is a library program that provides concert tickets, food and transportation to guests who may not otherwise be able to attend a summer concert in Grand Rapids. Designed exclusively for those facing economic hardship, this program diversifies community exposure to world-class live music.

Challenge/Opportunity

Each year, the Frederik Meijer Gardens’ Summer Concert Series brings performers from around the world to the Grand Rapids area. The series is very popular and many shows are sold out, which means people who are facing economic hardship often experience a financial barrier to access when it comes to attendance. Sponsored by The Steve & Amy Van Andel Foundation, this opportunity is especially inspirational for children with an interest in music and the arts.

Key Elements of Innovation

Tickets were given out in coordination with community organizations that assist underserved groups, including Treetops Collective, Puertas Abiertas, The Literacy Center and Living Stones Learning Academy.

Along with their ticket, recipients received a $25 food voucher, transportation to and from the event (provided by Hope Network), passes to Frederik Meijer Gardens, a library swag bag and free chair rental, as well as a library card.

Achieved Outcomes

Each of the 33 shows welcomed a group of ten people. Two groups of 100 tickets were also given out for a total of 533 total attendees throughout the summer. Attendees were individually chosen by nominated organizations that offer equitable services to communities facing the following barriers: poverty, violence and trauma, physical and mental barriers, discrimination and aging issues. Survey results indicated that participants felt treasured, connected, welcomed and excited. This initiative will continue through 2024.
