ChromeKit and Hotspot Lending

Sonoma County Library

Anti-Racism, Digital Equity and Inclusion | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

Sonoma County Library lends ChromeKits to patrons 13 and over. Each ChromeKit includes a Chromebook laptop and a SonomaFi wireless hotspot. The library also loans out the SonomaFI wireless hotspots individually. Through these programs, we significantly increase technology access among the diverse population of Sonoma County.

Challenge/Opportunity

The ChromeKit/SonomaFi programs address the need to bridge the digital divide in Sonoma County, and are particularly valuable to students. This need increased with the COVID-19 pandemic, as residents found themselves learning and working at home, sometimes without access to adequate technology. As the community navigated an unprecedented new way of life, many were not sure where to seek out necessary resources. SCL took the opportunity to foster digital equity by helping people learn about and acquire vital resources.

Key Elements of Innovation

ChromeKits and SonomaFi hotspots are available at all SCL branches on a first-come, first-serve basis. SonomaFi is for all computers, cell phones, and devices with wireless capabilities. Chromebooks and SonomaFi hotspots come in cases with all the necessary cables. Additionally, there are user guides in English and Spanish to assist patrons in successfully connecting with their devices. SCL has 610 hotspots and 185 ChromeKits in circulation. Devices can be checked out for 14 days without renewals.

Achieved Outcomes

ChromeKits and SonomaFi hotspots provide equal and equitable access to information to patrons. From January 2020 to October 20, 2021, there were 235 ChromeKit checkouts and 923 hotspot check outs. By providing these resources, SCL addresses the needs and preferences of the community and provides necessary access to technology. The ChromeKit and SonomaFi programs promote digital equity and are anticipated to provide education and experiences that spark lifelong learning and help community members succeed.
