Building Oklahoma’s STEM Workforce

Pioneer Library System, Okla.

Education - Children & Adults | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

Pioneer Library System developed a series of interactive programs designed to give children and teens hands-on experience with STEM topics critical to the economic prosperity of Oklahoma. Topics have included aeronautics, coding, geology, biomedical, weather, engineering, accounting and forensics.

Challenge/Opportunity

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Oklahoma has experienced one of the largest increases in STEM occupations over a six-year period, at 15.7%. Further, the Oklahoma Office of Workforce Development confirms the majority of the 100 Critical Occupations are in STEM related fields. By offering opportunities for children and teens to meet mentors in the field and engage in experiential learning, we can close the gap between demand and availability of a STEM-skilled workforce in our state.

Key Elements of Innovation

Programs have taken a variety of formats, from the curriculum-based Junior Achievement and PBS Design Squad Global to Discovery Camps facilitated by STEM professionals and library staff. All programs incorporate the following elements: involvement of a STEM professional, hands-on activity, open-ended exploration and creation and connection to a STEM field. Participants are provided with take-home information on what was learned, how to replicate the activity and ways to further explore the career field featured.

Achieved Outcomes

Nearly every program has a waitlist, with participants expressing great interest in more. Through our emphasis on STEM we have made our community more aware of the 100 Critical Occupations for Oklahoma, increased participant’s skills in STEM concepts and enabled families to form relationships with STEM professionals in their community. In addition, we have been able to elevate understanding within these industries as to the value of the library in addressing workforce needs.
