Broward County Library
Innovation Synopsis
Broward County Library’s FY2025 Annual Report Video transforms a traditionally text‑heavy report into an accessible, visually compelling story of the library’s impact. Created for residents, officials, and partners, it highlights major achievements across 37 branches, including five million visitors, 100,000 new cards, 90,000 open hours, 47,000 volunteer hours, and nearly 500,000 program attendees. Through clear narration, vivid graphics, and engaging storytelling, the video demonstrates BCL’s stewardship of public resources, celebrates staff and community partnerships, and underscores the library’s growing role in education, cultural enrichment, and social support throughout Broward County.
Challenge/Opportunity
Traditional annual reports are dense, text‑heavy, and inaccessible for many stakeholders. BCL needed a format that clearly conveyed the system’s vast scale, which included millions of visitors, hundreds of thousands of program participant, as well as its multiple initiatives ranging from disaster response to historic preservation. The challenge was to present complex data and diverse achievements in a way that was visually engaging, easy to understand, and widely shareable. This presented a major opportunity: to modernize government communication, demonstrate transparency, deepen community pride, and reach audiences who rarely interact with printed reports.
Key Elements of Innovation
The video reimagines an annual report as a dynamic digital storytelling experience. It uses concise narration, animated graphics, and footage from branches and events to present metrics with clarity and emotional resonance. It highlights innovative initiatives such as the Hollywood Pop‑Up, the digitization of 15 years of the Westside Gazette, and award‑winning campaigns like Sunny the Manatee. The video integrates civic engagement, cultural programming, and disaster response into one unified narrative. Produced entirely in‑house by BCL’s Marketing team, it demonstrates creative government communication through multimedia production, community‑centered framing, and broad digital distribution.
Achieved Outcomes
The FY2025 Annual Report Video successfully broadened access to library information and strengthened public trust. Viewers clearly understood key metrics, like “five million visitors, 100,000 new cards, 47,000 volunteer hours,” through visuals rather than text. The video elevated major accomplishments, from the Hollywood Pop‑Up’s rapid deployment to award‑winning outreach campaigns. Cultural and educational initiatives gained heightened visibility, and community support projects were showcased in compelling ways. Distributed through YouTube, social media, and e-newsletters reaching 450,000 subscribers, the video extended BCL’s message to diverse audiences and reinforced the library as an innovative, responsive public institution. The video is a finalist in PR Daily’s Nonprofit Communications Awards (to be announced September 30) and received a 2026 National Association of County Information Officers Award of Excellence.. It has 1.1K views on YouTube.
