Bridge to Learn: Conduit to Skills and Opportunity
Greensboro Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
Bridge to Learn is Greensboro Public Library’s workforce and economic development pathway supporting adults through trades training, entrepreneurship development, nonprofit leadership, and broader skill-building opportunities. The program pairs certified trades training (Interplay SkillMill, CareerSafe), Coursera career aligned learning, business intelligence tools (Gale Business databases), and nonprofit funding resources (Foundation Directory Online, Guidestar) with guided coaching from specialized librarians. Participants gain certifications, industry insights, market research skills, and business planning support—expanding job readiness, strengthening entrepreneurial capacity, and advancing equitable economic mobility for Greensboro residents. The initiative reflects the library’s commitment to empowering residents through expert staff guidance, high-impact partnerships, and personalized, community-centered support.
Challenge/Opportunity
Bridge to Learn responds to workforce shortages, digital literacy gaps, business research needs, and nonprofit funding barriers by offering accessible learning pathways for Greensboro adults, staff, and job‑seekers. Local shortages in HVAC, construction, and electrical fields, along with limited access to certified training tools, market data, and funding databases, create urgent community needs. Opportunities include expanding SkillMill trades training, market research instruction with ABI/INFORM and SimplyAnalytics, business plan development through Gale Plan Builder, nonprofit funding education using Candid tools, self‑paced and staff‑guided Coursera learning for residents and staff, and strengthened partnerships with GTCC, UNCG, SCORE, NC IDEA, and Launch Greensboro to meet growing demand.
Key Elements of Innovation
Bridge to Learn integrates certified trades training, market research instruction, nonprofit funding tools, Coursera learning, and digital skill‑building into a unified economic mobility model delivered by specialized librarians. Staff expertise in workforce development and business/nonprofit research helps residents, job‑seekers, City employees, and library staff navigate advanced platforms. Implementation includes SkillMill onboarding, OSHA‑10 preparation, CareerSafe tracking, Coursera pathways, business and nonprofit appointments, speaker pop‑ups, and data‑driven workshops. Innovation is strengthened by RAVE award‑winning career services staff and statewide recognition for business/nonprofit leadership. The program is fully replicable using public digital resources and community partnerships.
Achieved Outcomes
Bridge to Learn advanced workforce skills for 12 SkillMill learners, supported 11 OSHA‑10 HVAC completions, and produced 171 of 180 electrical training modules, with new electrical learners enrolling. One HVAC participant secured full-time employment after completing OSHA‑10 and SkillMill safety modules. Coursera strengthened digital readiness for 33 guided learners, 196 independent learners, and 39 City and library staff. Business outcomes include GTCC workshops, 10–25 attendee speaker pop‑ups, and increased Gale Plan Builder use. Nonprofit outcomes include Research 101, consortium field trips, and expanded Candid and LINC NC usage. More than 100 adults gained skills tracked through OSHA‑10 totals, SkillMill progress, workshop attendance, platform usage, and partner referrals.
