Innovation Synopsis

The Birmingham Public Library is reported to be the first American and Alabama Public Library system to kick off the launch of the Grow with Google Day of Digital Skills in partnership with Google. At this innovative day of events more than 700 patrons and staff participated in digital skills training sessions hosted by BPL and Google.

Challenge/Opportunity

The top challenge for the provisions of digital skills for workforce and economic development is funding of IT infrastructure. Free Google applications and tools currently allow great opportunities for patrons to expand their digital skills, no matter their financial income. This is an opportunity for patrons to add technical expertise to the long list of skills and knowledge that can be attained by attending training at the library digital skills Center.


Key Elements of Innovation

BPL drives the elements of collaboration, creative community engagement and workforce development partnerships to innovate the interactivity between patrons and local employers. Traditional and web-based digital skills classes will help patrons add critical digital skills to their resume, organize their business or improve efficiency within their current career.


Achieved Outcomes

At the launch day of events, more than 700 patrons and staff participated in digital skills training sessions hosted by BPL and Google.The library anticipates that patrons will increase 21st-century digital skills by attending Grow with Google classes and group workshops. These skills will be transferable to creating successful startup businesses and success in job searches. Google has made the tools and training easily accessible online.
